Recently confirmed DHS research chief will make one of his first public appearances in his new position at DHS on June 3 at the W Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Silver Spring, Md. — Dr. Reginald Brothers, the undersecretary for science and technology at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), will make one of his first public speaking appearances since his confirmation at DHS, as a keynote speaker at 9:45 a.m. on June 3 during the SIA Government Summit at the W Hotel in Washington, D.C., the Security Industry Association (SIA) announced today.

The SIA Government Summit brings together the public and private sectors to discuss legislative and regulatory matters of importance to the security industry. The two day conference, held June 3-4, also provides attendees with unique policy insights that help create new market opportunities.

The U.S. Senate confirmed Brothers as DHS undersecretary on April 7. As head of the DHS Science and Technology (S&T) Directorate, Brothers is responsible for a science and technology portfolio that includes basic and applied research, development, demonstration, testing and evaluation with the purpose of helping DHS operational elements and the nation’s first responders achieve their missions in the most effective, most efficient and safest manner possible.

“Our industry association has always had a strong working relationship with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security,” said Richard Brent, CEO of Louroe Electronics and chairman of the SIA Government Summit Planning Committee. “We appreciate this openness to engagement with the security industry, and we welcome remarks from Undersecretary Brothers as we seek ways to improve our partnership with the department, and specifically the Science and Technology directorate.

“As we believe that our nation should utilize state-of-art physical security technologies to protect the American people, the opportunity to open a dialogue with the undersecretary is vitally important,” Brent added. “Together, we can work to find ways to improve the interoperability, interconnectivity, durability and effectiveness of security technologies, and build a bridge to the future for a safe and secure nation.”

In October 2013, SIA and the DHS S&T Directorate signed a memorandum of understanding to bring together DHS employees, first responders, end users and industry experts to exchange information and resolve technical challenges to achieve common homeland security objectives. This was the first time that SIA has signed such an agreement with a federal agency.
