In today’s job market, standing out from the crowd is essential to landing your next role. Whether you’re in sales, human resources, operations or marketing, the ability to differentiate yourself can make the difference between getting the job or being overlooked. In the next few minutes, we’ll explore strategies to help you shine within the three key stages of the job search and interview process.

1. Prospecting: Finding the Right Opportunities

The first step to standing out is targeting the right opportunities for you. While many job seekers apply to numerous positions without direction, strategic prospecting can save you time and energy while improving your chance of success.

  • Leverage Your Network: Networking remains one of the most powerful ways to discover job openings that may not be publicly advertised. Attend conferences (like AcceleRISE or ISC West) and meetups and engage with peers on LinkedIn. Reaching out to former colleagues, mentors, hiring managers and even recruiters who have placed you in the past can uncover unlisted opportunities or get you a direct referral.
  • Research Employers: Take the time to learn about the organizations you are applying to. What is their financial situation? Core values? What is their hiring profile? What are their organizational needs? Where do they fit within their industry landscape? How would they fit within your career progression? This information can help you stack rank organizations during your search, allowing you to tailor your applications to reflect how you can add value to their team.
  • Pro Tip: Research the internal recruiter and hiring manager if available. Sending a quick email or LinkedIn note with your application adds a personal touch to your candidacy before the first interview.

2. Showcasing Your Talent

Once you have identified the right opportunities, it is critical that you showcase your talent and present your best self.

  • Tailor Your Resume: Generic and nonspecific resumes usually end up in the trash folder. Customize your application materials to highlight relevant experience, certifications and skills. Be sure to emphasize measurable achievements (sales numbers, organizational retention, impressions, etc.) to show your direct impact in previous roles.
  • Demonstrate Problem-Solving Skills: Employers want candidates who can think critically and address complex challenges. Be prepared to share specific examples that demonstrate your ability to solve problems, manage crises and make data-driven decisions under pressure.
  • Pro Tip: Proactively demonstrate strategic thinking. Sharing 90-day business plans during an interview process has a very high rate of success. These plans are a proactive way to show the interviewers how you think strategically, and how you would (hypothetically) take on your first few months in the role.

3. Close the Interview

Closing the interview is critical to earning an offer letter. This is a commonly missed step that is make or break for most interviews. It is important to leave a lasting impression and show why you are the best fit for the job.

  • Engage With Enthusiasm and Professionalism: Show that you’ve done your homework by asking thoughtful questions. Employers appreciate candidates who are genuinely interested in the organization and its success.
  • Demonstrate Cultural Fit: Employers want to know that you’ll be a collaborative team member who aligns with their values and work environment. Highlight your teamwork abilities, adaptability, and how you handle high-pressure situations to demonstrate you’ll thrive within their organization
  • Conduct Timely Follow-Up: Within 24 hours of the interview, take the time to thank the interviewers for their time, reiterate your interest in the position and highlight how your skill set makes you the best fit for the role.
  • Pro Tip: CLOSE THE INTERVIEW. Ask for the job. Ask for constructive feedback.

Properly positioning yourself during a job search requires key strategic steps. Aligning with the right fit, showcasing your best self and closing for the role, are key steps that have proven to be repeatable and successful. Standing out always requires doing something different and going beyond what is considered “normal.”

Attack your next job search with intent!
