SIA Reaffirms Commitment to Supporting Responsible and Ethical Uses of Security Technology

The Security Industry Association (SIA) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the responsible and ethical uses of security technology.
In July 2020, SIA implemented its Membership Code of Ethics and required all new and renewing members to affirm that they will abide by the provisions of the code. Violations can, at the discretion of the SIA Board of Directors, result in a letter of caution, suspension from the association, or expulsion from the association. SIA regards the code as a baseline for ethical behavior and encourages members to go above and beyond the standards it sets in their operations.
In accordance with the Code of Ethics and the policies and procedures accompanying it, the SIA Board of Directors reviewed a complaint filed by an SIA member company concerning Evolv and its involvement in a Federal Trade Commission action and settlement order. The Board issued a letter of caution, stressing to Evolv the vital importance of ethical business practices and of abiding by the SIA Membership Code of Ethics.
The Board also reviewed a complaint filed by an SIA member company concerning Verkada and its involvement in a separate FTC action and settlement order. In this case, the company actions in question were found to have occurred before Verkada became an SIA member. As a result, the complaint was dismissed with no further action.
SIA’s enforcement of its ethics policy is an ongoing process. The SIA Executive Committee and Board of Directors will continue to review all cases brought before it in a consistent and unbiased manner.
